We’ve been talking about a structural talent shortage for years. But according to Jess von Bank, strategic leader at Mercer and speaker at the Global Talent Strategy & Intelligence Conference, that assumption may be flawed. Maybe it’s not a shortage of people, but a shortage of insight.
Many organizations have little to no insight into the skills and ambitions of their own employees. According to Jess, Amazon and Instagram often know more about your workforce than you do. Without that insight, it’s impossible to identify where the real gaps are.
Instead of constantly hiring externally, the solution often lies within your own organization. Most people leave their employer because they don’t feel seen or supported in their development. At the same time, organizations say they can’t find the right talent. That paradox is telling.
AI and data can help you make smarter decisions—not to speed up hiring, but to better understand the talent you already have. Use technology to gain insight into skills, potential and development needs. Only then will you know what you’re truly missing and what you’re not.
You can only speak of a talent shortage once you truly know who you have, what they can do and what they want.
