Strategy only works if you dare to adapt

In a world where technology, the economy, and society are constantly changing, fixed plans have lost their shelf life. According to Jess von Bank, strategic leader at Mercer and speaker at the Global Talent Strategy & Intelligence Conference, it is time to let go of traditional strategy models. You can have a plan, but you must be willing to let it go.

The new pace of change

We are not facing a lack of data, but a lack of adaptability. AI and modern technology provide dashboards full of real-time insights—on skills, performance, workload, and development needs. But what good are these insights if your organization is not designed to respond quickly?

Jess observes that many companies struggle with so-called “change fatigue.” But according to her, that is not the real issue. People can handle change—if it leads somewhere. What wears them down is the lack of direction and repeated failure. Trust erodes when people don’t understand why something is changing or when mistakes are not corrected.

Forget the three-year plan

Leadership today is no longer about knowing everything in advance, but about being agile. Communicate more often than you think is necessary. Outline the projection, create space for learning, and adjust when needed. This requires courage, transparency, and trust in your team.

How do you lead an organization ready for continuous change? How do you turn real-time data into real action? And how do you bring your people along in that movement? Meet Jess von Bank and other leading thinkers at the Global Talent Strategy & Intelligence Conference on September 23 and 24 in Amsterdam.
