Top 10 job boards 2020 in Germany: the social platforms on the rise

In 2020 Intelligence Group conducted research into the most used and preferred job boards among active job seekers in Germany. Similar to the previous year, Indeed is at the top of the list of most used job boards in 2020. It is followed by StepStone and Monster with a second and third place respectively. The top 3 for active jobseekers has therefore not changed between 2019 and 2020, whereas this was the case in Belgium. Arbeitsagentur lost its fourth spot in 2019 and will have to settle for a seventh place in 2020, as XING and LinkedIn have both risen to fourth and fifth place respectively. Whereas LinkedIn is in second place in the top 10 in the Netherlands, the social platform is not among the top 3 favourite job boards in Belgium and Germany. In these countries active jobseekers apparently prefer to look for jobs via the traditional job boards rather than via platforms such as LinkedIn or Facebook. The top 10 is completed by stellenanzeigen.de and Facebook, both of which were previously outside the top 10.

Most used job boards by supply and demand side of the labour market

Data from Jobfeed were used to analyze the favourite job boards of intermediaries and direct employers. The table below shows a composite view of the top 10 most used job boards by once again active jobseekers, in contrast to the demand side, namely the top 10 for intermediaries and direct employers. A number of striking findings are worth mentioning here. For instance, the first place of job seekers differs from that of intermediaries and employers, who indicate Careerjet as most used job board. XING seems to differ in preference between the measured groups, but is clearly more preferred by intermediaries. Job boards meinestadt.de and stellenanzeigen.de are also mentioned by active jobseekers, but are less used by intermediaries and employers. Furthermore, it turns out that, despite Stepstone being the second most frequently mentioned job board by active jobseekers in Germany, by far not most vacancies are posted on it and it does not even appear in the top 10 by intermediaries. The table also shows that the job boards used by employers show slightly more similarities with those of job seekers than intermediaries. In this analysis it needs to be mentioned, however, that the differences between supply and demand may also be partly caused by the fact that some websites and/or job boards are difficult to observe or that the data is not easy to retrieve.

Also between intermediaries and employers a number of differences are visible. Neuvoo is in fourth place for intermediaries, while it is in ninth place for direct employers. There are also a number of job boards aimed at the temporary employment sector and platforms for freelancers in the top 10 for intermediaries, such as Freelancer. Logically, these are not in the top 10 for direct employers. Conversely, job boards RegioBizz, Timeworkers and info-zeitarbeit.de from the top 10 for employers do not appear in the list for intermediaries.

Differences, but also similarities, are visible between Germany and its bordering countries Belgium and the Netherlands. For all three countries Indeed is at the top of the list for active jobseekers. Indeed remains structurally preferable, as it is number one in Germany as well as in the Netherlands and Belgium. Social platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn also feature in all lists. On the other hand, it is striking that Facebook is particularly high up in the rankings in the Netherlands, while in Germany it is number ten on the list and in Belgium it does not feature in the top 10 at all. LinkedIn and Indeed do not feature in the top 10 for employers or intermediaries, as the number of vacancies and therefore popularity cannot be determined for these platforms.
